Technical Fit
Match the plant's machine list to your part envelope and geometry. 5-axis for blisks, Swiss-type for Ø0.3 mm pins, wire-EDM for square corners. Ask for real Cpk data on similar alloys, not glossy brochures.
Certifications & Quality DNA
ISO 9001 is table stakes; aerospace, medical or automotive demand AS9100, ISO 13485 or IATF 16949. Check that the scope on the certificate covers your processes-some shops outsource heat-treat and still claim the standard.
Metrology Capability
A CMM with 0.3 µm accuracy, laser-scanning head and calibrated reference artifacts should live on the same floor as the machines. If they have to ship your part across town for inspection, lead-time and risk both rise.
Capacity & Scalability
Ask for spindle-utilization graphs, not just "we have 30 machines". A shop running 90 % OEE can absorb a 5× ramp without new capital; a 50 % OEE shop will quote long lead-times when your forecast doubles.
Supply-Chain Integration
Look for kanban, VMI, EDI and barcode scan-pack. These systems cut your inbound inventory 20-40 % and prevent line-stops when demand spikes.
Financial Stability
Request the last two years' auditor's letter and insurance certificate. A sudden bankruptcy can leave you re-sourcing hardened tooling at 3× cost and 6-month delay.
Communication Speed
One named project engineer who answers in <4 h, weekly PPAP photos and a shared PLM portal eliminate the black-hole syndrome that kills launch dates.
Location & Logistics
A plant 200 km away with daily milk-run trucks can beat an overseas low-price quote once freight, duty and buffer stock are added. Map total landed cost, not piece price.
Continuous-Improvement Culture
Ask to see their kaizen board, OEE trend and last three 8D reports. Shops that drop PPM 50 % year-over-year will pass the savings to you in shorter cycle times and lower scrap charges.
IP & Data Security
NDAs are not enough. Verify secure file servers, code-locked CNC controls and visitor escort policies. Your next-gen design should not walk out on a USB stick.
