Mechanical Parts and Reference Systems A mechanical part is composed of several surfaces. To analyze the relative relationships among these surfaces, a reference must be established. A reference is a point, line, or surface on the part that serves as the basis for determining the positions of other points, lines, or surfaces. Depending on their functions, references can be classified into two categories: design references and process references. Design Reference: Used during the design phase to define the geometric relationships and dimensions of the part. Process Reference: Used during manufacturing to ensure accurate positioning and machining of the part.
