Basic Methods of Metal Mechanical Part Processing

In the production of mechanical part processing, metal is the most common material processed. However, different metal processing materials or different processing requirements lead to variations in the methods used for mechanical part processing. Below, we will introduce the commonly used metal processing methods in precision part processing factories, giving everyone a certain understanding of them.

Drilling

Modern machine tools come in a wide variety of types and models, with sizes ranging from small to large. Some small machine tools can be installed on workbenches, while some large ones require dedicated factory buildings to accommodate them. Simple machine tools are relatively easy to operate, while others have complex structures and operations. Regardless of the size or complexity of the machine tool, there are only a few basic categories, which correspond to the fundamental methods of shaping metals.

Drilling is a process in which mechanical part factories drill holes in solid metal. A rotating drill bit called a twist drill is used. A drill press is a machine tool used for drilling holes. Drill presses also come in various models and specifications. In addition to drilling, drill presses can perform other processing tasks. During drilling, the workpiece is positioned, clamped, and held stationary; the drill bit rotates and drills into the workpiece.

Turning and Boring

Lathes are the most common machine tools used for turning workpieces and are indispensable in mechanical part processing. Turning is a process in precision mechanical part factories where metal is removed from the workpiece. The cutting tool enters the workpiece or turns along the workpiece while the workpiece is rotating.

Boring is a process of enlarging or further processing holes that have been drilled or cast in metal workpieces. Boring on a lathe is completed by a single-edged tool that rotates and advances into the workpiece.

Milling

Milling is a process in precision mechanical part factories where metal is removed using a rotating cutting tool with multiple cutting edges, known as a milling cutter. For processing complex precision parts, milling treatment is required, and only more experienced precision part processing masters can operate the milling process.
